Details of Day Tours

The tour begins at the agreed meeting point in Filandia , Salento , or Pereira , from where you will be transferred by 4x4 vehicle to the entrance of the Barbas Bremen Nature Reserve , one of the best-preserved areas of Andean forest in Colombia`s Coffee Region . This ecosystem is part of a key biological corridor for biodiversity conservation in Colombia.

Upon arriving at the reserve, the landscape changes immediately. The temperature drops, the humidity increases, and sunlight filters through the canopy of the native trees, welcoming you into a true cloud forest. From this point begins a hiking experience in Quindío designed to connect you with nature in its purest form.

The hike covers approximately four kilometers along natural trails in high humidity, surrounded by multi-layered vegetation that reveals the complexity of the Andean forest. During the hike, the expert guide leads participants in observing the surroundings, explaining the different ecosystem levels , native plant species, and natural indicators that demonstrate the rich biodiversity of the Barbas Bremen Reserve.

This is one of the most renowned locations for wildlife viewing in the Coffee Region , with over 370 recorded bird species , as well as howler monkeys and other wild mammals that inhabit the forest. While sightings are not guaranteed, the environmental conditions increase the likelihood of observing wildlife in its natural habitat , especially in an atmosphere of silence and respect for the ecosystem.

Halfway through the hike, a strategic break is taken for hydration and rest , allowing participants to regain energy before continuing the second part of the walk. The small group format ensures a more intimate and flexible experience , where the guide can adjust the pace, provide more in-depth explanations, and stop at points of greatest ecological interest.

This type of hiking in the Coffee Region is characterized by its interpretive approach, where every step within the forest provides information about the relationship between climate, vegetation, and fauna . More than just a hike, it`s an immersion in one of Colombia`s most important ecosystems.

The tour ends back at the starting point after approximately four hours, where a refreshing natural lemonade is offered to conclude the experience. This simple yet meaningful moment marks the visitor`s return from the heart of the forest to the urban environment, following a genuine connection with a Colombian nature reserve that has preserved its pristine essence.

Reviews of Hiking In The Barbas Bremen Reserve

Unreal Howler Monkeys Hike in Barbas-Bremen Reserve, Colombia

Reviews

Absolutely loved this hike with Tangol! Barbas-Bremen is pure green magic - misty forest, guadua bamboo, and the echo of howler monkeys rolling over the valley. Our guide was friendly and super knowledgeable about birds, plants, and local coffee culture. The walk was moderate with a few muddy sections, so wear good shoes. We spotted a troop of howlers, toucans, and countless butterflies, plus views over the gorge. Transport was seamless, we had breaks for water and a snack, and safety felt top notch. If you're in the Coffee Region and want nature without crowds, this is a must-do.

The hiking excursion in the Barbas-Bremen Nature Reserve from Pereira lasts approximately 4 to 6 hours in total, including transfers, safety briefing, and photo stops. The guided hike is typically 2.5 to 4 hours through Andean cloud forest, following natural trails with moderate inclines, muddy sections, and stream crossings. The route covers between 5 and 8 km at an altitude of approximately 1,500–2,000 meters above sea level. The difficulty level is moderate, ideal for travelers with basic fitness and a sense of adventure. The itinerary prioritizes environmental interpretation, bird and howler monkey watching, scenic viewpoints, and responsible tourism in small groups.
Generally, the hiking tour includes a professional local guide (Spanish/English), entrance fees or permits to the nature reserve, basic insurance coverage during the activity, a safety briefing and environmental interpretation session, and transfers from a meeting point or centrally located accommodation in Pereira (subject to availability). Meals and drinks are not usually included, unless an optional box lunch is purchased; tips, personal expenses, equipment rental, and transfers outside the city limits are also not included. Confirmation is sent via email or WhatsApp with the digital voucher. We recommend informing us in advance of your preferred language, dietary restrictions, and hotel details. Services may vary depending on the season and weather conditions.
The climate is humid mountain, with frequent drizzle and temperatures that typically range from 16 to 24°C. Although the hike can be done year-round, the dry season (approximately December–March and June–August) offers less slippery trails. Bring hiking boots with good traction, a waterproof jacket or poncho, quick-drying, breathable clothing, a light thermal layer, a hat or cap, sunscreen, eco-friendly insect repellent, a reusable water bottle (1–2 L), and energy snacks. Trekking poles and a dry bag to protect your camera and phone are recommended. Avoid sandals. In case of heavy rain, the operator may adjust the schedule, route, or reschedule the hike for safety reasons.
This is a safe nature activity when done with a certified local guide and following their instructions. The terrain is uneven and can be muddy, so it is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. It is recommended for travelers aged 6–8 and up in good general health. It is not recommended for advanced pregnancy or for people with severe heart or respiratory conditions without medical authorization. Cell phone coverage is limited; the guide carries a first-aid kit and gives a safety briefing. For responsible tourism, keep your distance from wildlife (such as howler monkeys), do not feed them, and stay on the trail. Bring identification.
You can book online with secure payment and receive confirmation via email or WhatsApp. Spaces are limited, so it`s best to book in advance, especially on weekends, holidays, and during peak season (Easter, mid-year, and end-of-year). Departures are usually in the morning to make the most of the weather and wildlife viewing. The cancellation policy is generally flexible, with a refund if you cancel 24–48 hours in advance; in case of heavy rain or force majeure, rescheduling is offered. The best dates coincide with the dry season, although the experience is available year-round. Please indicate your language, hotel, and contact information for coordination.
