The best time to visit Puerto López is between June and September, coinciding with the humpback whale watching season. During these months, the weather is pleasant and sea conditions are perfect for excursions and tourist activities. In addition, it is an ideal time to enjoy the beaches, the Puntilla de Santa Elena Marine-Coastal Fauna Production Reserve and the Machalilla National Park.
Puerto Lopez offers a variety of tourist activities, such as whale watching, visits to Isla de la Plata, known as `the little Galapagos`, and explorations of the Machalilla National Park. You can also enjoy water activities such as snorkeling, diving and boat trips. Don`t miss the opportunity to walk along pristine beaches and sample local dishes at the area`s restaurants.
From Quito, you can take a flight to Manta and then a bus or taxi to Puerto Lopez, which will take approximately 2 hours. From Guayaquil, there are direct buses that leave regularly and the trip takes around 4 hours. If you prefer to drive, the route is well signposted and you can enjoy panoramic views along the way.
Puerto Lopez offers a wide range of accommodation options, from boutique hotels and ecolodges to hostels and cabins. There is something for every budget and preference. Many of these accommodations have additional tourist services, such as guided tours and water activities. It is advisable to book in advance during the peak whale watching season.
For your trip to Puerto Lopez, it is advisable to pack light clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. Don`t forget your camera, especially during whale season. If you plan to do water activities, bring a swimsuit, sandals, and a towel. It is also helpful to have insect repellent and a reusable bottle to stay hydrated.
