The best time to travel to Puno is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. During these months, the weather is more stable and there is less rain, which is ideal for enjoying outdoor activities and sightseeing, especially to Lake Titicaca and its islands. However, if you prefer fewer tourists, you can visit in the months of April and November, when the weather is still pleasant but with fewer visitors.
For a trip to Puno it is important to bring warm clothing and layers, as the weather can be cold and vary significantly during the day. We recommend bringing a coat, sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, comfortable pants, as well as a waterproof jacket for possible rain. Don`t forget your sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, as the altitude can intensify sun exposure. It is also essential to bring comfortable and sturdy shoes to explore tourist sites such as Lake Titicaca and the floating islands of the Uros.
There are several ways to get to Puno from Lima. The quickest way is to take a direct flight from Lima to Juliaca Airport, which is about a 45-minute drive from Puno. You can also opt for a bus ride, which takes around 20 to 24 hours and offers scenic routes across the Andes. Another option is to travel by train, although it is less common and can be more expensive, it offers a unique experience and spectacular views of the Peruvian landscape.
In Puno, some of the must-see tourist spots include the majestic Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, and its floating Uros Islands. You should also visit Taquile Island and Amantaní Island, known for their rich culture and traditions. The city of Puno offers attractions such as the Puno Cathedral, the Plaza de Armas, and the Balcón del Conde de Lemos. Don`t miss the opportunity to explore the Chullpas de Sillustani, ancient funerary towers located in a beautiful natural landscape.
Yes, Puno is generally safe for tourists. However, as with any tourist destination, it is important to take basic precautions. Keep an eye on your personal belongings and avoid carrying unnecessary valuables. It is advisable to book tours with licensed tour operators and follow their directions. It is also important to be prepared for altitude, as Puno is located at over 3,800 meters above sea level. Consider bringing medication for altitude sickness and staying well hydrated.
