Arequipa is a department of Peru located in the southern part of the country. It has 528 km of coastline on the Pacific Ocean - the longest regional coastline - and borders the departments of Ica, Ayacucho, Apurímac, Cuzco, Puno and Moquegua. The coastal zone is one of the driest portions of the coastal desert, meanwhile the interior Andean region presents steep valleys and canyons.

The best time to visit Arequipa is during the months of April to December. During this period, the weather is dry and sunny, ideal for exploring the city and its surroundings. Avoid the rainy season, from January to March, when travel conditions may be less favorable. Plan your trip to enjoy unique events such as the city`s anniversary in August, full of festivities and local culture.
In Arequipa, you can enjoy various tourist activities such as visiting the impressive Monastery of Santa Catalina, the Museum of Andean Sanctuaries where the mummy Juanita is found, and the impressive Colca Canyon, one of the deepest in the world. In addition, you can tour the Plaza de Armas, admire the colonial architecture of its churches and mansions, and enjoy the local cuisine in the traditional `picanterías`.
Arequipa, known as the `White City`, has a temperate and dry climate for most of the year. Temperatures range between 10°C and 25°C. The rainy season occurs between January and March and although it is not very intense, it can affect some tourist activities. Tourists usually enjoy a pleasant climate ideal for hiking and exploring the natural and cultural attractions of the region.
For a trip to Arequipa it is advisable to bring comfortable and light clothing for the day, as temperatures during the day can be warm. However, at night it can get cool, so it is advisable to bring a jacket or sweater. Don`t forget a pair of comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. If you plan to visit the Colca Canyon, packing warm clothing is essential due to the low temperatures at high altitudes.
Arequipa is generally safe for tourists, but as with any destination, it is important to take precautions. Keep your belongings safe, especially in crowded places such as markets and public transportation. Avoid remote neighborhoods at night and follow the directions of local authorities. Tourists generally find a welcoming and safe environment in most of the city`s tourist areas.
