The tour begins at the Yellow Butterfly Monument, located facing the sea, on La Marina Avenue. This monument pays tribute to the universe of Gabriel García Márquez, an author who immortalized the Colombian Caribbean with his magical realism. Inspired by One Hundred Years of Solitude, this space connects the city with its literary heritage, becoming the ideal setting to begin a tour that blends history, art, and local culture.
From there, we`ll head to Nicolás de Federman Park, one of the most important public spaces in the historic center. Here, we`ll learn about key aspects of the founding of Riohacha and its strategic role as a colonial port. This park also pays tribute to historical figures and houses commemorative busts that provide insight into the city`s political and social evolution.
The next stop will be Callejón de los Capuchinos, a cultural corner that brings together colorful murals with scenes portraying the history of La Guajira and Riohacha, from the Wayuu indigenous worldview to contemporary life. The guide will explain the meaning of each work and its importance to the local identity.
Continuing along Avenida La Marina, we will arrive at the Monumento de las Kastas, a sculpture that represents the cultural diversity of the region, referring to the ethnic mixes that have shaped the Guajiro social fabric. It`s an ideal space to reflect on cultural fusion, cultural resistance, and the convergence of knowledge.
Then we`ll stop at the “I ❤️ Riohacha” sign, one of the most photographed places in the city, where the seascape and palm trees form the perfect backdrop to capture the experience. This spot also allows for a wide view of the coast and the daily activity on the boardwalk.
Our walk continues to the Putchipü Monument, a key figure in Wayuu culture. This character, known as the "palabrero," is the mediator who resolves conflicts within his community using words as a tool for peace. His role has been recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
We will end the tour at the Monument to Identity, a work that encapsulates the cultural richness of Riohacha and its people. Here we will share a traditional snack, an ideal moment to exchange impressions, answer questions with the guide, and close the experience with a last look at the Guajiro Caribbean at sunset.
