>Day 1: Arrival at Torres del Paine National Park – Hike to Serón

Although considered one of the easier hikes on the circuit, the trail to Serón will show you many amazing landscapes on the untamed side of Torres del Paine National Park. You walk through a beautiful green carpet of trees, continuing along a hillside towards a grassland on this Patagonian plain. Following this relatively flat trail to Serón Campsite, you`ll see crystal-clear streams. Settle into your campsite, and you`ll still have some time to enjoy the vastness of the terrain before dinner, which will be served in the small but cozy dining room at Serón.

* Distance: 9 km

* Time: 4-5 hours

* Difficulty level: Medium

* Accommodation: Serón Campsite

* Meals: Box lunch and dinner

Day 2: Hike to Dickson

Today you will begin a long hike through rolling hills and wet meadows in the interior of the park. Snow-capped mountains, pastel blue lakes, and vast expanses of grasslands will form the backdrop for exploring the park`s north side, along with the stunning and imposing views of Dickson Glacier, Cerro Cuba, and other craggy peaks that mark the border between Chile and Argentina. Once you arrive in the Dickson area, check in and in the afternoon you can take a hike along the rocky shore of Dickson Lake, all before dinner at the refuge.

* Distance: 18.5 km

* Time: 6-7 hrs

* Difficulty level: Demanding

* Accommodation: Dickson Refuge (made-up bed) or campsite

>Day 3: Hike to Los Perros

Today`s hike begins after breakfast in the most secluded area of the park, amidst lush green vegetation. You`ll be able to feel the wind blowing through the bushes and hear the pleasant sound of Magellanic woodpeckers. Following the Los Perros River, you`ll climb a large moraine where you`ll be breathless as another picturesque mountain rises in the background: the magnificent Los Perros Glacier and its turquoise lagoon. Continue along a rocky trail before arriving at Los Perros Campsite, your accommodation for the night. We recommend you rest after dinner; the next day will be long.

* Distance: 9 km * Time: 5 hrs * Difficulty level: Demanding * Accommodation: Los Perros Campsite * Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, and dinner

Day 4: Hike to Grey via the John Garner Pass

Take a deep breath and get ready for the most demanding day of the Paine circuit, but also a very rewarding one. After an early breakfast at the barbecue area and ordering your boxed lunch, start by making your way through gnarled tree roots and large mud puddles, under the green canopy of the trees. Leaving the forest, you begin ascending over worn and loose rocks (sometimes snow-covered) until you reach the highest point of the circuit, the famous John Garner Pass (1,200 m above sea level). Enveloped by strong Patagonian winds while you marvel at the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and its magnificent, shimmering carpet, you descend along the side of a giant ice wall and continue along the trail past the El Paso campsite, where there is a ranger station. Then, cross the exhilarating suspension bridges before arriving at the Grey Hut for your dinner and a well-deserved rest.

* Distance: 22 km

* Time: 10–12 hrs

* Difficulty level: Very demanding

* Accommodation: Grey Hut (bed frame) or camping

* Meals: Breakfast, boxed lunch, and dinner

Day 5: Hike to Paine Grande

Today enjoy breakfast at the Grey Refuge before begin to marvel at more spectacular landscapes of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and the icebergs of Grey Lake (don`t forget to order your box lunch!). You will hike uphill through a mountain forest to reach the sometimes very windy Grey Glacier viewpoint. Continue the hike to Los Patos Lagoon, where you begin the descent through a narrow, windy valley that leads directly to the Paine Grande Refuge.

>Optional:If you have time in the morning, you can kayak on Grey Lake with prior reservation and subject to availability.

* Distance: 11 kms

* Time: 4 – 4.5 hrs

* Level of Difficulty: Medium

* Accommodation: Shelter (bed set up) or Paine Grande campsite

* Meals: Breakfast, box lunch and dinner

Day 6: Exploring the French Valley

Start early in the morning for a full day of hiking into the heart of Torres del Paine National Park. Right after breakfast, don`t forget to order your boxed lunch and get ready for a day of Patagonian mountain scenery.

Hike through arid landscapes and along the shores of the stunning blue waters of Lake Skottsberg. After approximately 2.5 hours of hiking, you`ll reach the Italiano Campsite, where the ascent into the valley begins. Climb up the immense rocky terrain and follow the treeline to the French Lookout, where you`ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Horns, turquoise glacial lagoons, and magnificent hanging glaciers cascading down the eastern face of Paine Grande (3,050 meters). If you`re lucky, you`ll hear the roar of cascading water and ice! This is also a spot where avalanches are commonly seen. It`s the perfect time to take some photos and enjoy your packed lunch. Return along the same path to the Italian Campsite and then continue towards French Domes or the Los Cuernos Refuge. Relax in the afternoon and enjoy a delicious dinner at your chosen refuge.

* Distance: 15 km (refuge – viewpoint – French Domes)/17 km (refuge – viewpoint – Los Cuernos Refuge)

* Time: Viewpoint – French Domes: 6-7 hrs/Viewpoint – Los Cuernos Refuge: 7-8 hrs

* Difficulty level: Demanding

* Accommodation: Refuge (bed) single bed) or Los Cuernos campsite/refuge (single bed) or French campsite (depending on availability) * Meals: Breakfast, box lunch, and dinner

Day 7: Hike to Central Tower Whether you choose to start the hike from the Los Cuernos refuge or from French Domes, you`ll make your way through pristine streams, admiring the hanging glaciers of the Mount Admiral Nieto (2,670 m) and you can look for condors while skirting the captivating blue-green waters of Lake Nordenskjöld. Continue along the well-marked trail to the Central Tower refuge, where you can relax in the afternoon. Don`t forget to order your boxed lunch after breakfast.

* Distance: 14.5 km (from Refugio Francés) – 12 km (from Refugio Los Cuernos)

* Time: 4–6 hours (depending on the starting point)

* Difficulty level: Medium

* Accommodation: Refugio (single bed) or Torre Central campsite

* Meals: Breakfast, boxed lunch, and dinner

Day 8: Hike to Base Torres – Return to Puerto Natales

Today`s hike begins in the Ascencio Valley, enjoying its extensive forests. During the final ascent, you`ll traverse a vast field of giant boulders, reaching one of the world`s most iconic viewpoints, the famous Base Torres viewpoint. At an altitude of 900 meters above sea level, marvel at the three granite towers (north, central, and south) and the shimmering turquoise glacial lake at your feet. This is the perfect time to take photos and enjoy your boxed lunch before returning along the same trail, now downhill, towards the Central Tower Refuge and the Welcome Center.

At 7:00 PM, you must take the "Las Torres" transfer to Laguna Amarga to connect with the 7:30 PM bus to Puerto Natales. The approximate arrival time in Natales is 9:15 PM.

* Distance: 22 km * Time: 8-10 hours * Difficulty level: Very demanding * Meals: Breakfast and boxed lunch

The O Circuit in the Paine Massif is considered medium to high difficulty. It is designed for adventure and trekking enthusiasts with prior experience on extended hikes. During the eight-day excursion, participants will cover long distances and face changes in altitude. It is essential to be in good physical condition and able to adapt to the variable weather conditions in Patagonia. It is recommended to bring the appropriate equipment and prepare for it with training hikes.
The 8-day self-guided package to the Paine Massif includes accommodations in camps or refuges along the route, maps and guides for orientation, and the necessary transportation to reach the start of the circuit. Additionally, many packages offer 24/7 emergency assistance and recommendations for organizing your trekking days. Food is not usually included, so it is important to bring supplies or purchase them at the refuges. Advance planning is key to fully enjoying this adventure in Torres del Paine National Park.
The best time to hike the O Circuit in Torres del Paine is generally from October to April. During these months, Chilean Patagonia offers a milder climate, with warmer temperatures and longer days, making hiking more enjoyable. However, it`s important to keep in mind that the weather can be unpredictable, with rain and strong winds at any time. Therefore, it`s essential to wear appropriate clothing for the variable climate. Hiking during these times also offers fewer access restrictions and a more comprehensive and accessible tourist infrastructure.
To safely complete the O Circuit, it`s essential to have the proper trekking gear. This includes comfortable, waterproof hiking boots, thermal and quick-drying clothing, a waterproof and windproof jacket, and a sleeping bag that can withstand low temperatures. It`s also recommended to bring a trekking pole for stability, sunscreen, a first aid kit, and enough water and energy-boosting food for each day. Up-to-date maps and a good GPS can be very helpful, as the circuit is self-guided. Proper preparation ensures a safe and enjoyable experience.
Yes, prior trekking experience is recommended before embarking on the O Circuit of the Paine Massif. This eight-day trek involves long daily hikes, carrying personal gear, and often challenging weather conditions. Inexperienced hikers may find the route challenging due to the constant ascents and descents and hours of hiking each day. It is advisable to have prior experience in similar terrain and be in good physical condition to ensure you enjoy this unique excursion without setbacks. Following these recommendations will ensure a comfortable and safe experience in Patagonia.
