Once settled in, you`ll have the rest of the day free to explore the city, stroll through its streets, and enjoy your first views of Lake Argentino.

Day 2 | Big Ice over the Perito Moreno Glacier

After breakfast you will depart for Los Glaciares National Park , on a journey of approximately 90 minutes from El Calafate.

Upon arrival, you`ll be able to contemplate the immensity of the Perito Moreno Glacier for the first time. But the real adventure will begin at the Bajo de las Sombras port, where you`ll board a boat to cross the Brazo Rico arm of Lake Argentino to the western shore.

From there you will walk through the forest accompanied by mountain guides until you reach the area where they will put on your crampons to begin the trek on the glacier.

The tour will take you along the southern moraine of Perito Moreno until you reach a spectacular panoramic viewpoint and begin exploring the ice.

For approximately three and a half hours you will walk on the glacier and discover a completely different landscape: intense blue lagoons, crevasses, sinkholes, caves and ice formations .

Expert guides will accompany you throughout the tour and help you understand how this incredible landscape is formed and transformed.

You`ll also have time to have lunch on the ice and enjoy a unique perspective of the glacier.

Then you will walk back towards the moraine and re-embark to sail again through the Brazo Rico, this time getting closer to the impressive south face of the glacier.

The excursion also includes time to walk along the walkways in front of the Perito Moreno Glacier and enjoy different views of the glacier.

After a day of approximately 12 hours, you will return to your hotel in El Calafate.

Important: The Big Ice excursion is for participants aged 18 to 50. If a passenger does not meet this age requirement, the activity may be replaced with a Mini-Trekking tour on the Perito Moreno Glacier , subject to availability and service conditions.

In El Calafate, visitors can enjoy a wide range of adventure activities that allow them to explore this striking region of southern Argentina in unique ways. Popular activities include glacier hikes, particularly on the Perito Moreno Glacier, where expert guides demonstrate the wonders of ice formation. You can also kayak on glacial lakes and take 4x4 excursions through the Patagonian steppe. Boat trips also offer stunning views of the glaciers from the water. These activities are ideal for those seeking adrenaline and fascinating natural landscapes.
The best time to visit El Calafate is during the southern spring and summer, specifically from October to March. During these months, the weather is warmer and conditions are ideal for outdoor activities such as glacier hikes and exploring natural parks. This is also the season when the local wildlife is most active, providing greater opportunities for bird and animal watching. However, each season has its own unique beauty, and those looking to avoid crowds may want to consider visiting during the off-season, although some services may be limited.
The climate in El Calafate is variable, with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 20°C during the summer and dropping below 0°C in winter. Due to its location in Patagonia, the weather can change rapidly, with strong winds and sporadic rain. It is advisable to wear layered clothing, including waterproof and warm jackets, to adapt to these climatic changes. Sturdy hiking boots are also essential for walking on uneven terrain, as well as sunglasses and sunscreen to protect against UV radiation, which can be intense on snow and ice.
