The South Shetland Islands are a group of Antarctic islands with a total area of 3,687 square kilometers. They are located about 120 kilometers north of the Antarctic Peninsula. By the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, the sovereignty of the islands is not recognized or disputed by the signatories and they are freely used by any signatory for non-military purposes.
