The best time to go whale watching on Isla de la Plata is from June to September. During this period, humpback whales migrate to the warm Ecuadorian waters to mate and give birth. The region`s dry season also ensures more pleasant conditions for the boat trip and observing the island`s rich biodiversity. Don`t forget to bring binoculars for a better viewing experience and always follow the guides` instructions to ensure safety and preserve the natural environment.
The Isla de la Plata and whale watching tour typically includes transportation from Puerto López, a certified tour guide, a boat ride to the island, a guided hike along its hiking trails, and multiple stops for whale watching. Lunch or snacks on board are also often included. Some packages include snorkeling equipment to explore the marine life around the island. It`s recommended to confirm the specific details of the package with the tour operator to ensure it meets your expectations.
While the Isla de la Plata tour does not require a high level of physical fitness, it is important to note that it includes hiking on moderate trails. The routes on the island can be uneven and sometimes steep, so participants are advised to be comfortable with moderate-length hikes. Additionally, the boat ride may be challenging for those who suffer from seasickness. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and consult with the tour operator about any accessibility concerns or physical limitations before booking the tour.
Isla de la Plata is famous for its impressive wildlife, often compared to the Galapagos Islands. Notable species include blue-footed boobies, frigate birds, albatrosses, and several species of seabirds. The surrounding waters are also home to a rich marine biodiversity, including sea turtles and tropical fish. During whale-watching season, humpback whales can be observed performing impressive breaches in the ocean. This abundant wildlife makes the island a must-see destination for nature and photography lovers.
To fully enjoy the Isla de la Plata whale watching excursion, it`s recommended to bring sunscreen, a hat or cap, sunglasses, and light, breathable clothing. A good pair of walking shoes is essential, as the island`s paths are uneven. Don`t forget to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. It`s also recommended to bring a camera or smartphone to capture unforgettable moments with the local wildlife. If you are prone to motion sickness, consider taking preventative medication before you set off.
