Beaches, Caves, and Rock Art: Arica in One Epic Day

Reviews

Such an awesome day in Arica! Tangol’s team picked us up on time and we cruised along gorgeous beaches before walking the Anzota Caves boardwalk—sea lions, seabirds, and waves booming in the cliffs. Then we headed inland to see ancient pictographs; our guide connected them to local cultures and made the history pop. Easy pace, plenty of photo stops, super safe and fun. Bring a light jacket, water, and sunscreen. If you want nature, ocean vibes, and real stories—go!

This is a half-day excursion, lasting approximately 4 to 5 hours. It includes transportation from centrally located hotels in Arica, a scenic drive along the main urban beaches such as El Laucho and La Lisera, and stops at scenic viewpoints along the Pacific coast, perfect for photography. The tour then continues with an interpretive walk through the Anzota Caves, utilizing safe walkways and viewpoints. The circuit concludes with a visit to pre-Hispanic pictographs in the Azapa or Lluta Valley, depending on the tour operator. Time is allotted for photos and a cultural explanation from a local guide. The itinerary may be adjusted due to tides and weather conditions.
The tour includes transfers in an air-conditioned tourist vehicle, a bilingual (Spanish and English) local guide, hotel pick-up and drop-off in Arica, and entrance fees to the sites visited where applicable. It generally does not include meals, drinks, tips, personal insurance, or other expenses. It is operated as a regular shared tour, and in many cases, a private tour option is available at an additional cost, subject to availability. Departures are usually scheduled in the morning to take advantage of the daylight and avoid the coastal heat. Before booking, please verify the inclusions and exclusions in the operator`s confirmation to avoid any surprises.
To fully enjoy this tour in Arica and northern Chile, wear closed-toe shoes with good traction for walking on boardwalks and trails, comfortable and lightweight clothing, a windbreaker or light jacket for the sea breeze, a hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. Bring a reusable water bottle, a fully charged camera or cell phone, and a small snack. Bring your ID and some cash for personal expenses. Binoculars are recommended for observing marine wildlife such as sea lions and birds. Respect the archaeological heritage: do not touch pictographs or leave the marked trails.
The excursion is of low to moderate difficulty and takes place at sea level, making it generally suitable for families with children and seniors in good general health. However, the section to the Anzota Caves includes stairs, uneven terrain, and walkways that may be challenging for people with reduced mobility or wheelchair users, so it is not recommended for them. Minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Pregnant women or travelers with medical conditions should consult beforehand. The local guide will adjust the pace of the tour, offering stops and rest periods according to the group.
Booking is done securely online and is recommended in advance, especially during peak season and weekends, due to high demand for the Anzota Caves and tidal schedules. Upon confirmation, please provide your hotel in Arica to coordinate pick-up. Change and cancellation policies vary by operator, but they typically allow modifications or cancellations free of charge up to 24 or 48 hours in advance. Due to weather conditions, tides, or walkway maintenance, the itinerary may be rearranged to ensure safety. Please review your voucher, stay in contact with the operator, and confirm the schedule the day before the tour.
