The Campo de Piedra Pómez excursion begins when we pick you up from your accommodation in Fiambalá.
This trip is mainly cross-country, which adds adventure to the journey. Along the panoramic, mountainous road, we will cross the river before reaching the picturesque town of Las Papas.
Las Papas is a mountain town inhabited by no more than 50 people descended from the Diaguitas, part of the original peoples of the region. Here we will make a stop to get to know the town and walk around it. On the way to Campo de Piedra Pómez we will find ourselves wading across the Papas River, and crossing it more than 80 times.
Once we have made the stop, we will continue our journey for an additional 30 kilometers. Along the way, we will pass by the Los Baños Hot Springs and the Los Hornos Hot Springs. Depending on the condition of the road, we may stop.
Further on, we will find Lagunilla, actually it is the Alumbrera Lagoon, but the town of Las Papas calls it that way, and we will pass through sandbanks that lead to the entrance of the San Buenaventura mountain range.
This effort of traveling almost 4km uphill on sand will be rewarded when we finally reach the impressive Campo de Piedra Pómez, where we can admire the unique geological formations and enjoy the natural beauty of the place.
After approximately an hour and a half of observing, touring, and taking all the photos that this place deserves, we begin the return towards the town of Fiambalá.
