Laguna San Rafael Expedition Highlights

We invite you to spend two days and one night on our expedition in Laguna San Rafael National Park, surrounded by a unique natural environment!

Through this expedition we can carry out activities such as navigation, contemplation, and hiking, thanks to which we can appreciate the landscapes from unique perspectives, always accompanied by our expert guides who will help us identify the fauna and flora that we find on our way.

We will spend the night in a shelter in the middle of the forest, in the National Park. It will be an incredible expedition in one of the most beautiful landscapes in the area, in total contact with nature.

Details Travel Packages

Depending on the choice of transfer, you will be picked up by the guide on the first day in Puerto Esperanza at 7:30 AM, or we will meet at the dock of Bahía Exploradores at 9:45 AM (please check below how to get there if you choose this option). Once gathered, we will have a brief safety talk and directions on the trip.

After the talk, we will embark on a smooth two-hour navigation through the delta of the Exploradores River, where we can enjoy a delicious breakfast while observing the unique beauty of the landscape.

Once we arrive at the San Rafael Lagoon pier, we will disembark for a 40-minute walk where we will pass through the ruins of the Ofqui hotel. After settling in the CONAF Caiquén refuge* and a light lunch, we will embark on a hike to the glacier viewpoint.

We will walk a path that will take us through the interior of a forest, which will present us with different views of the lagoon as we go along. We will finally arrive at the San Rafael glacier, where we will marvel at the impressive spectacle in front of our eyes. It is also possible to observe and listen to the thunderous landslides of ice.

Here we can also find native flora species, such as Chiloé and Magallanes coigue, cinnamon, nalcas, nirre, plum tree, tepa, guaitecas cypress, tenio mañio, and the endemic hebe salcifolia that only grows in Laguna San Rafael National Park. We can also see characteristic birds of the evergreen forest, and if we are lucky, we can take the shy pudu and the elusive winks. At the end of the walk, we will have dinner and spend the night in the shelter.

During our second day, after having breakfast at the refuge we will return to the pier to embark at 12:30 and navigate to the glacier wall, enjoying this magnificent spectacle from a different perspective. After lunch, we will start the return to Bahía Exploradores.

How to get to Bahía Exploradores: In Puerto Tranquilo, just before crossing the bridge of its northern limit, you must turn towards Route X-728 towards the Exploradores Valley, following this route until the end of the road (Km. 86). It is approximately two hours from Puerto Tranquilo, so they must leave approximately 7:30 AM to arrive at 9:45 to the meeting point.

*CONAF's Caiquen Shelter is equipped with: 2 single beds with sheets and blankets, 2 single bunk beds with sheets and blankets, 1 double bed with sheets and blankets, bathrooms with hot water, Kitchen - dining room - living room sector, Electricity only for basic lighting and charging cameras or telephones (through solar panels) and heating with firewood
