Details of Day Tours

We will start our tour picking up passengers from hotels in Puerto Tranquilo to Lago General Carrera, traveling 52 km west through Valle Exploradores. This journey will take us approximately 90 minutes.

Once we arrive at Valle Exploradores, we will prepare all the technical equipment and receive an introductory talk given by our specialist guides, who will accompany us at all times.

We will start our hike through a perennial forest, where we will be able to recognize diverse native species and observe some birds. Little by little we will ascend through the frontal moraine of the glacier until we reach a viewpoint, where we will be able to obtain a panoramic view from the top of the glacier, Mount San Valentín and Lake Bayo.

We will continue down the moraine and from here we will start walking on ice covered with stones and sand. Once we reach the clean ice (in approximately 1.5 or 2 hours, depending on the conditions of the group) we will take a snack and put on the equipment to start walking safely on the white ice.

Here begins the most fun part of the trek: we will be able to see, feel and listen to the live ice while we walk on it, look inside the ice caves, enjoy and get excited with the blue of its millenary pure waters, and learn more about how the glacier goes down the Ice Field to transform itself into a river that reaches the sea.

Once our tour is over, we will return to Valle Exploradores to take the transfer and return to Puerto Río Tranquilo.

Nature and Wildlife Hiking & Trekking

The best time to trek the Exploradores Glacier is between November and March, as weather conditions are more stable during this period in the Chilean Patagonia region. These months offer more pleasant temperatures and a lower chance of rain, allowing you to fully enjoy the outdoor experience. Additionally, daylight hours are longer, providing the opportunity to explore and admire the incredible ice formations in greater detail. However, it is always advisable to check the weather forecast before planning your excursion.
The Exploradores Glacier excursion is moderately difficult, making it suitable for those in relatively good physical condition and with basic outdoor hiking experience. The activity includes hiking over uneven terrain and requires the use of crampons for traversing the ice. Guides will provide a brief training session before entering the glacier. It is important to wear appropriate trekking footwear, layered clothing, and plenty of hydration. This unforgettable experience allows adventurers to delve into the fabulous world of ice and enjoy unique landscapes in Chilean Patagonia.
For trekking on the Exploradores Glacier, it is recommended to wear several layers of clothing, including a waterproof jacket and windbreaker, as the weather can change rapidly. Waterproof hiking shoes with good grip are essential, as are sunglasses and sunscreen due to the sun`s reflection off the ice. Don`t forget to bring gloves, a hat, and a small backpack with water and some energy snacks. The guides will provide all the necessary equipment, such as crampons and helmets, to ensure your safety during the hike.
The Exploradores Glacier hike is generally best suited for adults and teenagers, as it requires a good level of physical fitness and the ability to hike over challenging terrain. However, some tour operators may allow children over 12 years old to participate, provided they are accompanied by a responsible adult and comply with safety recommendations. It is crucial to check with the specific tour operator regarding age restrictions and requirements for children before booking the tour. It is also important to consider the child`s physical stamina and attitude toward outdoor activities of this nature.
The total duration of the Exploradores Glacier excursion is usually approximately 8 to 9 hours. This includes the transfer time from Puerto Río Tranquilo to the glacier, the ice trekking, and the return trip to the starting point. The tour begins early in the morning and ends in the afternoon, giving participants the opportunity to explore the majestic ice formations and enjoy the stunning scenery throughout the day. It is advisable to bring enough food and drinks, as the tour extends over most of the day, and facilities are limited once the trek begins.
