Details of Day Tours

We will depart very early today from your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama. The time is approximately between 4:30 and 5:00 am, depending on the time of year.

We will begin our ascent by heading to the Tatio Geysers, the highest geothermal field in the world, located at 4,200 meters above sea level. Within its expanse, there are approximately 80 active geysers.

We will arrive very early at the El Tatio Geysers, at dawn, when the columns of steam and hot water emerge from the ground. At this time, we will have the opportunity to explore the geysers, thermal pools, and other geothermal formations. It`s an impressive sight to see the hot water rise into the air like a fumarole in the middle of this lunar landscape.

Here we will enjoy a delicious hot breakfast while admiring the view of the steam fumaroles, which can easily reach 10 meters in height.

If you`re brave enough, this is your chance to immerse yourself in the natural hot springs of El Tatio. It`s a unique experience to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings while taking a dip in the thermal pool, which has an average temperature of 36°C.

Once ready, we`ll begin the return to San Pedro de Atacama, but first, we`ll visit the small town of Machuca, which is made up of only about 20 houses, each with solar panels as a source of energy. Here we can enjoy its cuisine, such as llama meat anticuchos or goat cheese empanadas. We can also walk down its only street, which leads to its old church.

After our walk through Machuca, we`ll return to the center of San Pedro to drop you off near the municipal parking lot. From there, you can explore the town a bit, have lunch, or return to your hotel on your own. If you prefer to take a private bus, we can also drop you off at the hotel where we picked you up.

Be sure to bring appropriate clothing. Warm clothing, as mornings at the geysers can be very cold due to the altitude, and a camera to capture the stunning views and unforgettable moments. It`s also important to follow the safety instructions provided by your guide to enjoy this experience safely and respectfully.

This full-day tour is a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the Tatio Geysers, as well as the local culture in the Machuca Village.

This is a must-see if you`ve ever made it to this, the driest desert in the world.

Culture and history Nature and Wildlife Hot Springs Sightseeing

The Tatio Geyser and Machuca Village excursion includes round-trip transportation from San Pedro de Atacama, a bilingual tour guide, entrance fees to the geysers, and breakfast. During the tour, you`ll have the opportunity to observe the natural phenomenon of the geysers at sunrise, explore the Andean desert landscapes, spot local wildlife such as flamingos and vicuñas, and visit the picturesque town of Machuca, known for its typical altiplano architecture. The tour offers a culturally and naturally rich experience, ideal for those interested in the region`s geological diversity.
The Tatio Geysers can be visited year-round, but the weather varies seasonally. The best time to visit is spring and fall (September to November and March to May), when temperatures are milder and there are fewer tourists. During the winter (June-August), mornings are very cold and temperatures can drop considerably, but the geysers are impressive with the steam in the cold air. In the summer (December-February), the afternoons can be warm, and although it is peak season, it is possible to enjoy the geothermal phenomena without the extreme conditions of winter.
For the excursion to the Tatio Geyser and the Machuca Village, it is recommended to wear warm, layered clothing due to the low temperatures at dawn in the Atacama Desert. A thermal jacket or coat, gloves, a hat, and a scarf are essential. During the day, the weather may become milder, so it is practical to dress in layers that you can remove as the temperature rises. Footwear should be comfortable and suitable for walking on uneven terrain; good hiking boots or shoes are ideal. Don`t forget sunglasses and sunscreen.
The excursion to the Tatio Geyser generally begins very early in the morning, around 4:00 a.m., as it`s essential to arrive before dawn to observe the spectacular jets of steam in the early morning light, the time of peak geothermal activity. The total duration of the tour is approximately 8 hours, so you`ll be back in San Pedro de Atacama around noon. This schedule allows you to enjoy the entire tour at your leisure, exploring the geysers and visiting the town of Machuca, located on the Andean plateau.
Visiting the Tatio Geysers is safe as long as you follow the guide`s instructions. It`s important to respect the signs and avoid getting too close to the geysers, as the water and steam can reach high temperatures. Furthermore, the high altitudes can affect some people, so it`s recommended to avoid overexertion and stay well hydrated. The guides are experienced professionals who know the area well, ensuring a safe and educational tour. It`s essential to follow their instructions to enjoy this natural wonder safely and responsibly.
