Our adventure begins early to explore one of the most important nature reserves on the planet.

For approximately 11 hours we will travel about 380 kilometers accompanied by a specialized naturalist guide.

  • Bird Island Lookout.
  • Puerto Pirámides (free time).

  • Sea lion colonies.
  • Elephant seals.
  • Punta Norte, where during certain times of the year it is possible to observe orcas hunting from the coast.

In addition, throughout the tour we will be able to observe guanacos, maras, foxes, rheas and a huge variety of Patagonian birds.

Lunch will be free (not included).

Excursion to Punta Tombo

On another day we will head towards the Punta Tombo Protected Natural Area, one of the most impressive natural spectacles in Argentina.

We will walk along the interpretive trails that cross the Magellanic penguin colony, allowing us to observe their behavior up close during the breeding season.

We will have approximately two hours to walk among thousands of penguins and discover each stage of their life cycle: nest building, incubation, hatching and raising the chicks.

During the tour we will also be able to see:

  • Guanacos.
  • Patagonian Maras.
  • Foxes.

Wildlife Wonderland: Penguins at Punta Tombo, Sea Lions and Whales on Stunning Peninsula Valdés

Reviews

Hands down one of my favorite days in Patagonia. Tangol nailed the logistics: on-time pickup, comfy van, and a guide who knew every critter. Punta Tombo was penguin heaven—thousands waddling everywhere, super respectful distances. Then Peninsula Valdés delivered sea lions, guanacos, and we even spotted a couple of whales from shore. Plenty of photo stops, zero stress. If you want wildlife without the hassle, book this.

The classic tour package from Puerto Madryn typically includes round-trip tourist transfers in a licensed vehicle, hotel pick-up and drop-off at a designated meeting point, and a professional Spanish/English-speaking guide providing interpretation of Patagonian nature and culture. It generally does not include entrance fees to the Punta Tombo Wildlife Reserve or the Península Valdés Protected Natural Area, port taxes, or meals. Whale watching excursions in Puerto Pirámides, if offered, are booked separately. Schedules and stops are subject to weather and wildlife availability. Please verify what is included/excluded for your chosen date and operator before confirming your booking.
To optimize your nature and photography experience in Argentine Patagonia, the best time to visit depends on your interests. At Punta Tombo, Magellanic penguins arrive between September and April; peak activity is in October and November (courtship/nesting), and chicks and their first molt can be observed in January and February. On the Valdés Peninsula, southern right whale sightings occur from June to December, with excellent conditions between September and November; sea lions and elephant seals can be seen for much of the year. The weather is windy: spring and summer offer long days. Always check the specific season and tour availability when traveling.
The typical logistics for this excursion from Puerto Madryn involve full days. Each departure (Punta Tombo or Península Valdés) usually lasts 8 to 10 hours, with an early pick-up (approximately 7:00–8:00 AM) and return in the late afternoon (5:00–7:00 PM), depending on road conditions, interpretive stops, tides, and weather. If you book the transfer package for both destinations, plan for two separate days. In Península Valdés, the time can be adjusted if you choose to add the whale watching boat trip in Puerto Pirámides (optional activity). Check your voucher for the meeting time, grace periods, and whether there are different pick-up points for each area.
To enjoy the excursion comfortably and safely, pack layered clothing (technical t-shirt, fleece, windproof/waterproof jacket), a hat or warm jacket depending on the season, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Comfortable closed-toe hiking or athletic shoes are ideal for gravel trails. Bring reusable water bottles, snacks, cash for entrance fees and services, a camera, and binoculars for wildlife viewing. In autumn and winter, add gloves and a buff. Respect ecotourism guidelines: keep your distance from penguins, sea lions, and guanacos, do not feed animals, and stay on marked trails. Patagonian weather changes quickly: check the forecast before you set out.
Whale watching in Península Valdés and Punta Tombo depends on the season, weather, and wildlife behavior, so sightings can never be 100% guaranteed. During peak season, the chances are high: Magellanic penguins between September and April; southern right whales from June to December. Whale watching tours from Puerto Pirámides, when available, are usually booked and paid for separately from transportation and operate subject to sea conditions and tides. If weather forces rescheduling or cancellation, the operator will apply their change and refund policy. Confirm conditions, costs, and availability before booking.
