Horseback Riding Through Los Andes In Mendoza

Reviews 5/5 Stars - Based on 5 Reviews

Highlights of Cruce De Los Andes Horseback Ride

This adventure is very special as we will have the opportunity to pass through one of the most astonishing achievements in human history. We will be crossing the Cordillera de Los Andes through the exact same place where San Martín and O`Higgins passed in 1817.

In this 7-day, 6-night journey, we will traverse awe-inspiring landscapes flanked by the highest hills of America, Aconcagua and Mercedario. Along our way, we will see huge herds of guanacos and also condors. As the sun sets, we will be greeted by an impressive number of stars illuminating the sky of the southern hemisphere. The tranquility, the campfire, the guitars, and the rounds of mate in the camp create the perfect atmosphere to reflect on the experiences of each day.

It is an ideal excursion for nature and horseback riding enthusiasts who want to experience the crossing just as the Army of the Andes did.

WHAT TO BRING?
- Sleeping bag suitable for temperatures between -5º and -10º.
- Hat with chin strap (straps to secure the hat to the neck and prevent it from being blown away by the wind).
- Rain poncho. Unlike a waterproof jacket, these are spacious and not only protect us but also cover the saddlebags and saddle.
- Two sets of clothes. We recommend field pants or loose-fitting trousers. It is better to travel with shirts rather than round-neck t-shirts, as the former provide better protection from the sun. It is advisable to carry multiple thin layers instead of one thick layer. Polar fleece jackets are very suitable, ideal for any season.
- A warm shirt, leggings or long underwear.
- Warm jacket and/or poncho.
- Woolen hat.
- Neck scarf, scarf, and gardening gloves.
- Swimwear and shorts.
- Sneakers and espadrilles. For horse riding, it is not recommended to wear wide shoes such as combat boots, as they can get stuck in the stirrup. Those who are accustomed to it can wear riding boots. Sneakers should be waterproof.
- Personal medication.
- Insect repellent.
- No vaccines are mandatory in the area. However, as with any outdoor activity, we suggest getting a tetanus vaccine.
- Personal hygiene items (wet wipes can also be useful) and a small towel.
- Sunscreen and lip balm.
- Sunglasses with retainers (optional).
- Headlamp, a flashlight that is worn on the head with a headband.
- Binoculars (optional), mug, plate, and cutlery.

Details of Day Tours

DAY 1: We will begin on Saturday at noon by meeting at our "Club Andino Pehuenche" Hostel. Upon your arrival, you will check-in and gather with the group to enjoy a delicious lunch. Our experienced guides will provide an informative and safety briefing, where they will give you all the details about the exciting journey ahead. Additionally, we will conduct a customs inspection to select the essential items you will need during the expedition. The rest of your belongings will be securely stored at the hostel.

After the briefing, we will prepare our saddlebags and head towards the picturesque "Arroyo El Deshecho" or the stunning "Valle Hermoso," always prioritizing exclusivity and weather conditions. There, we will set up camp for the first night and begin the horseback ride the next day. Together, we will arrange our "beds" with tarps, sleeping bags, and blankets. Meanwhile, our assistant guide will prepare a delicious fire-roasted barbecue.

DAY 2: After an early breakfast, we will gather with the horses. With the assistance of our expert guides, we will carefully select the perfect horse for each rider, ensuring a comfortable and safe experience.

Once ready, we will venture into the mountains, exploring breathtaking landscapes as we ride. During lunchtime, we will enjoy a packed cold meal to recharge our energy and continue our horseback ride towards the incredible place known as "Las Vegas Negras." There, we will establish our second base camp, where we will spend the night.

The daily riding time is approximately 2 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the area. Enjoy every moment of this unforgettable horseback journey through the majestic landscapes of Los Molles.

DAY 3: After breakfast, we will embark on our journey westward, towards the impressive "Cerro Áspero," rising 3,200 meters above sea level.

During lunchtime, we will take a break at the beautiful "Cajón del Trujillo," where we can rest and replenish our energy. Afterwards, we will continue our horseback ride towards the "Piedras Negras," a summer outpost located in a wet area with grass used for grazing animals during the summer season. Here, we will spend our third night camping, surrounded by the tranquility and beauty of nature. The riding times will be around 2 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, allowing us to fully enjoy the surroundings.

DAY 4: On this day, we will leave the mules and saddlebags at the base camp as we head towards the border with Chile, specifically the Santa Elena Pass, at an altitude of 2,800 meters.

From there, we will venture into the impressive "Valle de las Cargas," where we will enjoy panoramic views. During the journey, we will take a break for lunch. Afterwards, we will continue our trip until we reach the "Puesto Correa," where we will set up camp for the fourth night. In total, we will ride for approximately 5 hours, immersed in the natural beauty of Los Molles and its surroundings.

DAY 5: We will start the day with breakfast before embarking on our new horseback journey. Our final destination will be the impressive "Cajón del Trujillo," a place that will reward us with a wonderful view.

During approximately 5 hours of riding, we will pass through captivating landscapes. Once we reach the "Cajón del Trujillo," we will establish our campsite for the fifth night.

DAY 6: In the morning, we will saddle the horses and mules, ready to begin our return journey. Our final destination will be the Ancho Pass, where lunch will be waiting for us. Once finished, vehicles will be waiting to transport us back to the Club Andino Pehuenche Hostel in Los Molles. We estimate arriving around 4:00 PM, allowing us to enjoy a relaxing and comforting afternoon.

DAY 7: On the last day, you can enjoy a group outing in a transfer, either in the morning or afternoon, with a duration of 2 to 3 hours.

During this group activity, we will head to the Pozo de las Ánimas, where you can marvel at its landscapes. Then, we will visit the Laguna La Niña Encantada. Finally, we will relax in the comforting hot springs of Hotel Lahuen-Co. It is important to note that if you choose to do the activity in the morning, you will have the afternoon free, and vice versa.

With this, we come to the end of our service.
