Climbing Cerro Corona: A Challenge with a Reward in La Cumbrecita
The adventure begins in the charming setting of La Pampita (Schönau), the starting point of this route that will take you to the top of Cerro Corona. From there, at 1,420 meters above sea level, the trail will guide you west, winding between the imposing Kristallberge hills.
After an initial three-kilometer walk, the path will take you to the ruins of the old Estancia "Los Merlo", a historic mountain settlement. It is at this point that the most challenging ascent of the route begins: a zigzag climb along a rocky path that will give you unparalleled panoramic views of the valley.
Over the next three hours, you will overcome a 500-meter elevation gain, reaching the final section known as the "semicircle path." This final effort will lead you to the foot of an easy-to-climb rock face, which is the gateway to the summit.
At 2,020 meters above sea level, the summit of Cerro Corona will greet you with a stunning 360-degree view, a perfect natural lookout point to recharge your batteries and enjoy a well-deserved lunch. Take the time you need to absorb the immensity of the high-altitude landscape before returning along the same path to La Cumbrecita.
