Travelling In Perito Moreno
The best time to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier is during the southern spring and summer, from October to March. During these months, the weather is warmer and the days are longer, allowing for more daylight hours to explore the park. In addition, during this season, it is more common to see the detachment of large blocks of ice, one of the main attractions of the glacier.
El Calafate is the closest town to the Perito Moreno Glacier and offers a wide variety of accommodation options, from budget hostels to luxury hotels and cabins. Some recommended places to stay include Hostería los Hielos, Hotel Posada Los Álamos, and Design Suites Calafate. It is advisable to book in advance, especially during peak season, to ensure availability.
To get to Perito Moreno Glacier from El Calafate, you can take a tourist bus, rent a car or hire a tour. The distance is approximately 80 kilometers and the trip takes about an hour and a half. Organized tours usually include transportation, a guide and some additional activities such as hiking on the glacier or boat rides.
There are a variety of activities available at the Perito Moreno Glacier. The most popular are walks on the glacier, known as mini-trekking and big ice, which allow you to explore its ice formations and cavities. You can also take a boat ride to see the glacier from another perspective. Additionally, there are walkways and viewing points that offer spectacular views of the glacier and Los Glaciares National Park.
It is not mandatory to hire a guide to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier, as Los Glaciares National Park has well-marked walkways and viewing points that are accessible on your own. However, for specific activities such as glacier walks and boat trips, it is necessary to do so through authorized guides and tour operators. These tours offer a more complete and informative experience about the glacier and its surroundings.
