Located at the foot of the imposing Christ the Redeemer and framed by the jungle of the Tijuca National Park, Parque Lage is one of the most charming corners of Rio de Janeiro. With a perfect combination of history, nature, and culture, this destination is a must-stop for those visiting the city.

If you are planning your trip, it's important you know all the necessities before exploring this iconic place.

A bit of history

Parque Lage was originally a sugar production estate during the colonial era. In the 1920s, the area was acquired by businessman Henrique Lage. This magnate commissioned the construction of the current mansion as a gift for his wife, the opera singer Gabriella Besanzoni.

Over time, the site became a public space. It currently houses the School of Visual Arts of Rio de Janeiro, a cultural center offering exhibitions and workshops open to the public.

What to do in Parque Lage

Undoubtedly, the most representative image of Parque Lage is its central courtyard with the pool surrounded by columns and with views of the Christ the Redeemer. This spot has become a popular location for photo and video sessions. But there are also other interesting areas and activities:

  • School of Visual Arts: Located within the mansion, the school offers contemporary art exhibitions, workshops, and free cultural events, making the visit an enriching experience.
  • Trails and nature: The park features various paths surrounded by tropical vegetation, artificial caves, small lakes, and natural viewpoints ideal for those seeking a relaxing walk in nature.
  • Charming café: Inside the mansion, there's a café where visitors can enjoy breakfast or a snack with one of the city's most picturesque views.
  • Trail to Christ the Redeemer: For the more adventurous, one of the trekking routes leading to the top of Corcovado starts from Parque Lage. The hike takes approximately two hours and goes through the dense jungle of Tijuca National Park, offering spectacular views along the way.
