Located between the provinces of
Salta and
Jujuy, is the third
largest salt flat in South America. It covers approximately 12,000 hectares and is located at
4,000 meters above sea level.
Its origin dates back to between five and ten million years ago, when the basin was completely covered with water from a volcano.
Currently it is economically exploited by different cooperatives in the area which extract salt.
It is also open to tourism. Visitors must enter from the Jujuy side.
