We depart from your hotel in Coyhaique around 6:00 a.m. to start the trip along the Carretera Austral Sur towards the town of Puerto Tranquilo, 223 km away. You can see beautiful forests of lenga, plum, coigüe and ñire along the way, as well as, some iconic landmarks such as the Chiguay Lagoon, Piedra del Conde and Portezuelo Ibáñez, which is the highest point in the Southern Highway (1000 meters above sea level). Once we approach the valley of the Ibáñez River we will be able to appreciate the magnitude of the imposing Cerro Castillo, while we pass by its slopes and cross the village of the same name. Throughout this journey, we will be crossing the new Cerro Castillo National Park.
We continue our way through valleys and rivers, passing through the Dead Forest, witness of the eruption of the Hudson Volcano that took place in 1991. Continuing down the Murta River Valley, we will find ourselves facing the immensity of Lake General Carrera. During the whole trip we will make several stops for pictures.
Finally we will arrive at Puerto Tranquilo for lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, brief transfer to the shores of Lake General Carrera and from there, go on a boat ride to the "Capillas de Mármol" Nature Sanctuary, a place of singular scenic beauty, where the waves of the lake have eroded and polished the limestone, forming very attractive caves. In the afternoon, return to the city of Coyhaique with a stop at the Villa of Cerro Castillo to buy some snacks, if you wish.
