Colonia del Sacramento, known locally as Colonia, is the capital of the department of Colonia, in southwestern Uruguay. Colonia is a tourist city with a rich historical heritage, which makes it a perfect place to cut with routine and relax. Its proximity to the city of Buenos Aires make these cities a place of relax for Argentines.

Although it is true that the city of Colonia is small, it has a very good amount of attractions and activities to know.

The Barrio Histórico

As its name said, the historic district is undoubtedly the maximum attraction of this place. It is about what used to be the old colony disputed between the Portuguese and the Spaniards; as a consequence there are two styles of construction and different cultural characteristics. It is important to know that the entire historic district and its buildings is a monument to enjoy and contemplate.

Among the main points are: the Iglesia Matriz, the Calle de los Suspiros and the Portón de Campo. You can also visit several museums: Portuguese, Spanish and the Azulejo museum. Finally, you can visit the lighthouse of Colonia to which you can enter and obtain the best panoramas of the city.

Rambla and beaches of Colonia

The beaches are very popular during the summer season. They are ideal river beaches to go with the whole family, especially with small children. If you want to know beaches far from the city, we recommend Santa Ana. It is a very quiet place with clean beaches and white sand, where it is possible to rent houses for summer throughout the year and it is ideal to go to rest.

Plaza de Toros

It was built more than 100 years ago, it is one of the most important buildings in the city. It displays the exuberant architecture for the time. This place is something that cannot be missed. In front of this, you can find the Railway Museum, which is located in an old train station. The museum has a restaurant that was create inside the old train carriages.

There are many places to know in the city and most have a great historical connotation.
