Details of Day Tours

Your adventure begins with the transfer from El Calafate International Airport to the El Chaltén Terminal , connecting both destinations comfortably so you can start discovering Patagonia without worrying about logistics.

Once in El Chaltén, you will prepare to take one of the most famous hikes in the region: the guided trek to Laguna de los Tres , a route that has been part of the guided experiences of Fitz Roy Expeditions since 1995.

The journey begins at the Electric River Bridge , from where the trail gradually winds its way into the mountain landscape. As you progress, you`ll cross lenga forests and observe the traces of ancient glaciers that shaped the valley.

During the journey, some of the great peaks of the massif will appear, such as Saint-Exupéry, Poincenot, Mermoz, Guillaumet and Fitz Roy , accompanying the path towards one of the great moments of the day.

Upon reaching Río Blanco , a former base camp for climbers, the most demanding section of the trek begins: the final ascent up the moraine. The total elevation gain is approximately 900 meters , making it a challenging hike.

The effort is rewarded when Laguna de los Tres finally appears before your eyes, nestled against the enormous granite walls and glaciers of Fitz Roy. This is one of the most iconic landscapes in all of Patagonia and one of the best places to appreciate the sheer scale of the massif.

After enjoying the scenery and resting in this unique natural environment, we will begin the return journey, exploring the Laguna Capri area before finishing again at the starting point.

The experience is accompanied by local mountain guides , with decades of experience hiking the trails of El Chaltén and a deep knowledge of the natural environment.

At the end of your stay, you will again have the transfer from the El Chaltén Terminal to the El Calafate Airport , completing a proposal designed to combine adventure and practicality.

El Calafate to Fitz Roy: A Day Packed With Wild Scenery

Reviews

Picking us up in El Calafate made this huge summer day surprisingly easy. Our little group clicked fast: a British couple, two Brazilians, and us, all swapping snacks and terrible Spanish jokes by the trailhead. The drive to El Chaltén was gorgeous, with guanacos appearing like roadside celebrities. We hiked through lenga forest, paused at Piedras Blancas viewpoints, and tackled the final climb to Laguna de los Tres—tough, but absolutely worth the view of Fitz Roy. Our guide kept the pace friendly and pointed out condors. Coffee and a quick town wander afterward rounded it off perfectly.

The excursion typically includes round-trip ground transportation from El Calafate to El Chaltén, as well as transport to the trailhead for Laguna de los Tres, one of the most popular natural attractions in Argentine Patagonia. The hike offers views of Los Glaciares National Park, forests, rivers, and stunning vistas of Mount Fitz Roy. Depending on the tour details and booking conditions, some additional services, such as meals, entrance fees, a trekking guide, or trekking poles, may not be included. We recommend reviewing the final program details before booking the tour.
The trek to Laguna de los Tres is a moderately difficult activity, especially during the final stretch, where the terrain is steep and uneven. The entire route can take approximately 8 to 10 hours, depending on the group`s pace, stops, and weather conditions. It is a long hike, so good physical condition and basic hiking experience are necessary. The effort is rewarded with a spectacular view of Mount Fitz Roy and the lagoon. It is important to wear hiking boots, comfortable clothing, and bring plenty of water.
This service is designed for travelers staying in El Calafate who wish to take an adventure excursion to El Chaltén without hiring their own vehicle. Transfers typically begin at designated points or with pick-up from selected accommodations, depending on availability and booking conditions. The route traverses some of Santa Cruz`s most iconic landscapes, including Patagonian steppe, lakes, and mountains. Departure and return times may vary depending on the season, the provider`s schedule, and the trek`s logistics. It is recommended to confirm the exact meeting point before traveling.
To enjoy the trek to Laguna de los Tres, it`s essential to have the right equipment for the mountains and Patagonia`s changeable weather. We recommend wearing trekking boots with good traction, comfortable pants, a thermal base layer, layers of clothing, a waterproof jacket, and a windbreaker. It`s also a good idea to bring a small backpack, water bottle, sunscreen, hat, gloves, sunglasses, and snacks for the trail, unless the tour includes a packed lunch. Trekking poles can be helpful during the final ascent. Before starting your hike, check the weather forecast and the tour operator`s recommendations.
The excursion is dependent on weather conditions and the state of the trails in Los Glaciares National Park. In El Chaltén, wind, rain, snow, or low visibility may alter the itinerary, delay transfers, or cause the activity to be suspended for safety reasons. The final decision rests with the tour operator and park authorities. If the weather prevents the trek, rescheduling, date change, or cancellation policies will depend on the booking conditions. It is advisable to purchase travel insurance and verify the policies applicable to the excursion beforehand.
