The Land Route through the Quebrada del Toro

The adventure begins early in the morning in the city of Salta. From there, the overland journey to San Antonio de los Cobres begins. It`s important to note that the distance between Salta and San Antonio de los Cobres is almost 170 km through mountainous terrain , reaching altitudes of over 3,700 meters along the way.

To make this journey enjoyable and progressive, strategic stops are made at iconic points such as Campo Quijano , the imposing Viaduct of the Bull and the picturesque town of El Alfarcito , where you can learn about the work and crafts of the local communities while you adapt to the altitude.

The Experience Aboard the Train to the Clouds

Upon arriving at the San Antonio de los Cobres station, the most anticipated stage of the day begins: boarding the historic C-14 branch line .

During the train journey, you will cross the vast arid landscapes of the Puna until you reach the dazzling La Polvorilla Viaduct , located at over 4,200 m above sea level. After some free time to admire the scenery and take unforgettable photographs, the train returns to the San Antonio de los Cobres station to begin the return trip.

For your convenience, we offer two ways to experience this adventure:

Option 1: Bus from Salta + Train to the Clouds (Recommended)

The most complete and comfortable option. It includes round-trip ground transportation from the city of Salta with a specialized guide, photo stops at the Quebrada del Toro, and train tickets from San Antonio de los Cobres to the La Polvorilla Viaduct. This option also includes a stop for breakfast and afternoon tea, with tea and regional products, on both the outbound and return bus journeys.

Ideal if you don`t have your own vehicle or prefer to avoid driving long distances on high mountain roads.

Option 2: Train to the Clouds Ticket Only

Designed exclusively for those who have already arranged their transportation and plan to travel independently to San Antonio de los Cobres. You will meet directly at the station to board and take the train to the La Polvorilla Viaduct.

It is recommended to dress in layers (a coat for the altitude and wind), use sunscreen, sunglasses, and bring water to stay hydrated. Also, remember to bring money for expenses not mentioned or included in the itinerary, such as lunch. Remember to bring your ID (national ID card or passport) for boarding at the station.

Distances and travel times: The distance between the city of Salta and San Antonio de los Cobres is considerable (approximately 3 to 3.5 hours each way). If you do not have a vehicle or pre-arranged private transportation, we strongly recommend booking the "Bus + Train" option, as there are no frequent public services or last-minute transfers available in the area.
