About this tour

We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco very early in the morning, and take the road towards the town of Mollepata, a district located in the province of Anta, 55 miles away from the city. We will enjoy an energetic breakfast, and tour continues until we reach Soraypampa (3,920 masl), our starting trek point.

Here, we will have a short briefing before begin the trek. The trekking starts taking an upwards path, and after a 1.5 hours of hike, we will be surrounded by amazing mountains, with the opportunity to admire local fauna, and incredible wildlife as horses, sheep, Andean foxes, vizcachas, among others.

We are going to reach the highest point located at 4,200 meters above sea level, and here, we will enjoy a spectacular viewpoint of Lake Humantay. This beautiful tourist attraction is part of the Salkantay trek, an alternative hike of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

The Humantay Lake tour will impress you with amazing crystalline waters, awesome landscapes, and incredible combination of mountains and glacier. This lake is formed by the thawing of two snow-capped mountains: Humantay and Salkantay.

After watching this awesome place, we will back to the starting point to have a well-deserved Andean lunch.

Later, we will back to the city of Cusco to drop you off at the hotel.

Frequently asked questions

The best time to trek to Humantay Lagoon is the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is more stable, with less chance of rain, making the trail safer and offering incredible panoramic views of the Andean landscape. However, since it's peak season, it's advisable to book in advance. From November to March, there are rainy seasons, which can make the trail more slippery, but you can enjoy lush nature and fewer tourists.

The trek to Humantay Lagoon is considered moderately difficult. The hike begins with a steep incline and takes place at an altitude of over 4,200 meters above sea level. Therefore, it is important to be acclimatized to the altitude and be in good physical condition. The trek typically lasts 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the pace of the group. It is recommended to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, as well as bring water and energy snacks. Despite the challenge, the spectacular views and the beauty of the lagoon make the effort worthwhile.

For the excursion to Humantay Lagoon, it's essential to wear comfortable, trekking-appropriate clothing, including a waterproof jacket, as weather changes are frequent in the mountains. Trekking shoes with good grip are essential for safe walking. Also, don't forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from UV rays. Also bring water and snacks to maintain your energy, as well as a small backpack to carry your belongings. A camera is recommended to capture the stunning views.

To be physically prepared for the trek to Humantay Lagoon, it's important to do cardio exercises, such as walking, jogging, or cycling, at least three times a week in the weeks leading up to your trip. These exercises will strengthen your cardiovascular system and improve your endurance. It's also beneficial to climb stairs or hills to simulate the incline of the terrain. Acclimatizing to the altitude is key, so it's recommended to arrive in Cusco a few days before the trek to allow your body time to adapt. A balanced diet is also crucial to improve energy and performance.

The approximate cost of the Humantay Lagoon excursion can vary depending on the tour operator, but is usually between $70 and $100 USD. This cost generally includes transportation from Cusco, a professional bilingual guide who will accompany you throughout the tour, as well as breakfast and lunch. Basic medical equipment for emergencies is also usually included. However, it's important to check if entry to the protected natural area is included and make sure you have travel insurance. Some operators offer trekking poles as part of the service to make your hike easier.
