Antarctica – A journey of discovery and learning

5.0/5 Stars - Based on 5 Reviews

To summarize the expedition itinerary, we can say that it is an 11-day voyage that takes you from the "End of the World" in Ushuaia, Argentina, to the heart of Antarctica.

Expedition Summary

This voyage is a comprehensive exploration of the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands, designed to immerse you in a world of ice, wildlife, and stunning landscapes.

  • Initial Step: The expedition begins with a sail through the Beagle Channel and a two-day crossing of the famous Drake Passage, the same route taken by early polar explorers. During this time, the focus is on observing the seabirds that accompany the ship.

  • Exploration Phase: Once in Antarctica, the expedition dedicates itself to in-depth exploration of the region. Landings and Zodiac rides are made to visit iconic sites such as Danco Island, Neko Harbour, Paradise Bay, and Port Lockroy. At these sites, the focus is on observing colonies of penguins, seals, and whales, in addition to seeing the spectacular glaciers and landscapes.

  • Volcanic Islands: The trip also includes a visit to the South Shetland Islands, where volcanic calderas such as Deception Island are explored and more penguins and polar birds can be seen on Half Moon Island.

  • Return: The expedition concludes with the return trip through the Drake Passage and the final disembarkation in Ushuaia.

Itinerary

Day 1: The end of the world, the beginning of a journey

Your journey begins where the world ends. Ushuaia, Argentina, considered the southernmost city on the planet, is located at the southern tip of South America. In the afternoon, you embark from this small town in Tierra del Fuego, nicknamed "the End of the World," and sail through the mountain-fringed Beagle Channel for the rest of the night.

Days 2 and 3: The Path of the Polar Explorers

For the next two days, as you cross the Drake Passage, you'll enjoy the same experiences as the great polar explorers who charted these regions: cold salty breezes, choppy seas, and maybe even a spout from a fin whale. After passing the Antarctic Convergence—Antarctica's natural boundary, formed when cold, northward-flowing waters collide with warmer subantarctic seas—you'll enter the Antarctic Circumpolar Upwelling Zone. Here, it's not just the marine life that changes, but the birdlife as well. You might spot wandering, grey-headed, and black-browed albatrosses, Cape petrels, southern fulmars, Wilson's petrels, blue petrels, and Antarctic petrels, among other species.

Days 4-7: Enter Antarctica

Grey stone peaks outlined with snow, towers of blue and white ice, and amazing wildlife await you both at sea and on land. You'll first pass the snow-capped Melchior Islands and the Schollaert Channel, sailing between the Brabant and Anvers islands.

Places you might want to visit include:

  • Danco Island: Activities here focus on the gentoo penguins that nest on the island, plus the Weddell and crabeater seals found nearby.

  • Neko Harbour: An epic landscape of giant glaciers and endless wind-sculpted snow, Neko Harbour offers the chance to take a Zodiac excursion to see the surrounding alpine peaks up close.

  • Paradise Bay: You might take a Zodiac tour of these vast, ice-filled waters, where there are great possibilities to find humpback and minke whales.

  • Port Lockroy: After cruising through the Neumayer Channel, you could visit this former British research station, now a museum and post office, located on Goudier Island. You'll also take part in activities around Jougla Point, where you'll meet gentoo penguins and blue-eyed shags.

Day 8: Scenes from South Shetland

The volcanic islands of South Shetland are windswept and often shrouded in mist, but offer subtle pleasures: there's a wide variety of flora (mosses, lichens, flowering grasses) and a considerable amount of fauna (gentoo penguins, chinstrap penguins, southern giant petrels).

At Deception Island, the boat dives through "Neptune's Bellows" to enter the flooded caldera. Here you'll find an abandoned whaling station and thousands of Cape petrels, along with kelp gulls, brown skuas, southern skuas, and Antarctic terns. It's possible to hike in this fascinating, desolate volcanic landscape. Alternatively, you could take part in activities near Half Moon Island. In this area, chinstrap penguins and Weddell seals often make their home on the beach near Camara Base, an Argentine scientific research station. Conditions in the Drake Passage will determine your exact departure time. Days 9 and 10: Familiar Seas, Familiar Friends The return journey is far from lonely. As you cross the Drake Passage, you'll be greeted again by the wide variety of seabirds you saw on the way south. But now they seem a little more familiar to you, and you to them.

* No previous cruise experience is necessary; however, all passengers must be in good health and able to walk several hours per day. * The expedition is conducted primarily by boat and is generally not very physically demanding. You will be invited to participate in all land-based activities, but you may remain on board if you wish. * All passengers must be able to climb and descend the ship's steep ladder to reach water level and board the zodiacs. Staff will provide assistance on and off the boats. This will become increasingly easier with practice. * Land can be slippery and rocky. You will be traveling to remote areas without access to sophisticated medical facilities, so you should not join this expedition if you have a life-threatening condition or require daily medical treatment.

* Insurance: It is recommended that all passengers have personal travel insurance. * Clothing Recommendations: In keeping with the atmosphere of our expeditions, casual clothing is recommended onboard. Wear casual, comfortable clothing for all activities. Please be aware that much of the spectacular scenery can be seen from the deck, and it can be slippery there. Wear sturdy shoes with non-slip soles and make sure your jacket is always handy. Wear several layers of clothing, as the temperature on board is pleasant, but it can be cold on deck. * Camping Recommendations: You should be prepared for a night outdoors at the pole. Regulations prohibit bringing any fuel or heating equipment ashore. This means you should bring: Thermal underwear - Sunscreen - Fleece vest or jacket - Sunglasses - Thick socks (with extra pairs) - Down jacket - Warm gloves or mittens - Breathable jacket and pants (e.g., Gore-Tex) - Thermal undergloves (fleece) - A turtleneck or fleece scarf or similar - Warm hat *Kayaking Recommendations: All kayaking trips are led by certified and experienced guides, but you should always exercise caution when kayaking in polar regions. We will provide you with appropriate outerwear. Kayaking trips are limited to 14 passengers per guide. This number allows the guides to keep track of everyone and ensure support is provided to scale the trip to the group's skill level. A safety boat will accompany the activity in case of emergencies. All equipment for the activity is included (Paddles with drip rings - Basic wetsuits (4mm neoprene) in different sizes - Kayak spray cover - Light waterproof jacket (cagoule) - Life jacket/kayak vest - Neoprene boots).

Please note: * The expedition is English-speaking. * The itinerary is a guideline; activities and programs may vary depending on local weather conditions and ice conditions to take advantage of wildlife viewing opportunities. The expedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary. * The itinerary may include locations that require permission to embark, which must be granted by the relevant national authorities. Such permission is not granted prior to the publication of these itineraries. * Flexibility is crucial on expedition cruises. * The average cruising speed for the m/v Plancius is 10.5 knots. * Gratuities: The customary gratuity for the vessel's crew and expedition leader is given as a blank contribution at the end of the voyage. You will receive detailed guidelines on board. Gratuity is a very personal matter, and the amount is at the discretion of each passenger. As a generally accepted guideline, we suggest USD 8.00 to USD 10.00 per person per day. It's better for the team if we deliver the money in dollars and in cash.

Antártida a bordo: aventura, fauna, glaciares y paisajes inolvidables

Antarctic Magic: Penguins, Whales, Epic Zodiacs, and Seamless Tangol Planning From Ushuaia

Mind-blowing trip! Tangol Tours nailed every detail from Ushuaia to Antarctica. Comfortable ship, stellar crew, and science talks that made the ice come alive. Zodiac landings with penguins and seals were pure magic, and we even spotted whales. Food was great, safety felt solid, and fellow travelers were fun. Worth every penny. Go! Sunsets were unreal, too.
