Patagonia Itinerary - El Calafate - El Chalten - Torres Del Paine Trip (EL CALAFATE)

Highlights

Day 1: Buenos Aires - El Calafate

Arrival to El Calafate, where we'll leave the vehicle. 
We suggest that you visit the Perito Moreno Glacier. 70Km off road surface from the city. 
As we start the trip, you will go around the Redonda Bay of the Argentinian Lake, where you will have the chance to see the “Lonely Island” Traveling the whole Patagonian steppe, you will have the oportunity to see some native species such as guanacos, rheas, foxes, etc. Along the road you will find the Cerro Comisión, Centinela river, Cerro Frías and several ranches such us “ Alice”, one the most famous ranches in Argentina. 
Once you cross the Mitre river, you will get to the National Park Perito Moreno. You will discover an amazing and unique landscape with huge trees. Once you get to the “Curva de los Suspiros” you can appreciate a panoramic view of the glacier until you get to the viewpoint. 

Accommodation: 1 night in El Calafate.

Day 2: El Calafate - Torres del Paine National Park

330 kilometers from Calafate (265 km of road surface, 65km gravel). 
We invite you to know one of the most famous National Parks in Chile, the National Park Torres del Paine. It is located in the XII Region of Chile. It's declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

Accommodation 3 nights in Torres del Paine.

Day 3: Torres del Paine

Free day to visit the park. We recommend you to do the trekking to the base of the towers. The trekk starts in Laguna Amarga (7 km) until you get to the Cerro Paine Ranch. Then you'll you continue to climb, crossing the Chilean camp, until you get to the Torres del Paine (600 meters).

Day 4: Torres del Paine

Free day to explore the park. We suggest you to visit another area of the park, such as the Grey zone. There you can take a boat trip to the Gey Glacier.

Day 5: Torres del Paine - El Chalten

480 kilometers (410km of road surface and 70km of gravel).
We'll return to Argentina to visit the capital of trekking, El Chalten.
El Chalten is surrounded by the Fitz Roy hill and also offers a unique landscape full of peace. 

Accommodation 3 nights in El Chalten.

Day 6: El Chalten

Free day. We recommend you to do the trekking to the “ Laguna de los tres” and Fitz Roy hill 

Duration: 5 hours (one way). Difficulty: medium. Elevation: 700 m.

Remember to bring a snack for the hike.

DescriptionThis is the closest spot to Mt. Fitz Roy and with no doubt the most famous of all hikes. This hike starts at the end of Av. San Martín, next to Madsen campsite. The slope is quite steep during the first hour until you reach the Del Salto stream valley towards the Mt. Fitz Roy. You will notice that the Antarctic Beech becomes more and more numerous along the path and approximately after an hour and a half further down the way you will reach a well marked natural lookout point. 
There you will find a sign that interprets the whole landscape right in front of you. The path always continues up along the Del Salto stream until reaching the drainage of the Lagunas Madre e Hija. Four hours ahead from the starting point you will arrive to Poincenot base camp (big free campsite) and after crossing the Río Blanco you will arrive to Río Blanco base camp (only for climbers). 
From there, the path continues in ascent approximately 400m. until you reach Laguna de los Tres.
The trail finishes at the old moraine ridge with an extraordinary view of the lagoon and De los Tres Glacier. This is the closest view to the granite wall of Mt. Fitz Roy and the peaks around. 
Going down the moraine, you can take a trail that surrounds the lagoon until its outfall where it is possible to appreciate the emerald waters of the Laguna Sucia and its hanging glaciers.

Day 7: El Chalten

Free day. We recommend you to try the hike to Laguna and Cerro Torre.

Duration: 4 hours (one way). Difficulty: easy. Elevation: 200 meters.

Description: This is one of the most traditional trekking paths in Patagonia, from el Chalten to “Cerro Torre”. The road goes togheter with the river up to its source. All along the road you will find great viewpoints of the chain Adela and Cerro Torre. The hike crosses the camp DeAgostini, where you can stay overnight.


Day 8: El Chalten - El Calafate

214km paved. Return to El Calafate. Return of the vehicle.

excellent tour. really amazing place the Perito Moreno Glacier. a total must do in Argentina. You won´t regret it. We loved the south of the country, both Argentinean and Chilean sides were great.

we did the tour of our lives in argentina. the perito moreno glacier was stunning, we spent 2 days just exploring it. then if you like hiking there is nothing better in south america than el chalten where we freely trekked all over and Torres del Paine in the chilean side that was just perfect. Accommodation and tours were well chosen. nice trip!
