Tilcara is essentially mountainous. It is crossed by the picturesque Quebrada de Humahuaca, through which runs the River Grande de Jujuy. From east to west is crossed by the Tropic of Capricorn, which passes through the town of Huacalera.
In this department virtually no plains, so that its appearance is extremely mountainous orographic.
