Maracaná, formally Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho, is a football stadium in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the largest stadium in Brazil and was the largest in the world for a long time.
It was the venue for the Football World Cups in 1950 and 2014, and both hosted the matches that defined the title. It was inaugurated on June 24, 1950 and originally it was called Municipal Stadium of Maracanã. In 1964 it was given its current name, Estadio Mário Filho, in honor of the founding journalist of Jornal dos Sports, a local newspaper. But for locals his name was and still is Maracanã, because the name of the neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro in which it is located comes from a bird that inhabited the place called Maracanã.
In this stadium the final match of the final group round of the 1950 World Cup was played, between the national teams of Brazil and Uruguay, a meeting that holds the public record in official matches: The victory of Uruguay, by 2 - 1, went down in history with the name of Maracanazo, and is considered the maximum milestone of the world football championships.
