Many people have come to the realisation during this past year that we need to protect the places that we enjoy and stop being so unsustainable. When lockdowns started across the world, many of those people who were confined to small spaces in cities were resentful of those who lived in the countryside. We all realised how important nature and the great outdoors is to us, so we should strive to protect it.

2020 has been a strange year with next to no travel, but hopefully this will change as 2021 progresses. Many people will also want to change their travel habits, making sure that the travel they do has less of an impact than it might have done before. Travel will always be important because it provides hundreds of millions of people across the world with an income, but we must care more for those places we want to visit.

This article provides those planning a trip to Argentina with knowledge about the most sustainable hotels in the country, helping you to protect the beauty of Argentina. Sustainability isn’t quite on the forefront for many hotels, but if you choose one that is locally-owned, then often the sustainability comes with this!

Buenos Aires

Palo Santo

Located in Palermo Hollywood, this green boutique hotel prides itself on the green services that it offers. The hotel has four types of room: premium, deluxe, terrace and suite, all with a private balcony.

The hotel serves breakfast every morning where you can dine inside or out and enjoy a large selection of continental, traditional and hot options. The hotel was built using materials, equipment and suppliers that did not damage the environment.

There are 33 innovations which the hotel describe as making them green. The innovations include using energy-efficient light bulbs, rain-water recovery, use of highly durable materials, a green roof, 800 plants to absorb CO2 absorption and green cleaning products. These are just some examples, so have a read here to find out more about the hotel and the strive for sustainability. I really recommend this one-of-a-kind hotel in the capital!

Home Hotel

Another highly recommended hotel located in Palermo Hollywood, Home Hotel is a boutique hotel situated very close to some of the best restaurants in the city! It doesn’t feel as though it is in a busy neighbourhood, instead the garden oasis of native trees and fruit trees instead feels more like it is in the countryside. There are a range of room types to suit your needs, but all of them follow the same sustainability concepts

The hotel works with the El Ceibo recycling group to ensure what can be recycled is, solar panels soak up the scorching sun to heat the pool, sensors and cards switch off electricity in corridors and bedrooms when not in use and reusable dispensers throughout reduce the need for single-use plastics.

Iguazu

Awasi Iguazu

Inside native woodland just outside of Puerto Iguazú you will find this carbon neutral lodge. With only 14 rooms, this hotel provides the ultimate private experience. Each lodge has access to their own private guide, who will tailor make your trip to your requirements.

Awasi has three hotels in total, these are located in Iguazú, Atacama and Patagonia. These hotels protect 340 hectares of native woodland which absorb a greater amount of CO2 than the lodges produce, a brilliant strategy. The hotel uses locally-sourced and seasonal food products and uses a shortened menu to minimise waste. Single-use plastics have been removed and replaced with reusable products.

Guests are also given reusable water bottles which can be filled at filtered dispensers throughout the lodges. When you visit Iguazú you will see first-hand the impact of logging as you fly over the region and you’ll recognise the importance of the work these hotels do.

Mendoza

Casa Uco

Whilst not in the centre of Mendoza, you will probably be visiting the area to take advantage of the wine. Casa de Uco, is a wine resort that is the perfect place to discover wine and relax in beautiful surroundings. This young hotel has sustainability at its heart.

I’ll explain a few of the approaches the hotel uses to improve its sustainability. All wine corks are collected by a local kindergarten and used for crafts to reduce waste. Solar collectors heat water to replace gas. The hotels own organic garden grows more than 30 types of food and all of this is used for the hotel restaurant. Finally, the hotel does not encourage tours of the vineyards by vehicle, instead encouraging bikes, walking or on horseback.

Ushuaia

Los Cauquenes

Every room in this hotel has a fantastic view of either the Beagle Channel or the snow-capped Andes, what more can you ask for. Selling itself as a high-end hotel, you won’t be disappointed by what you find inside. A private beach is there for guests to enjoy, where guests can sit and enjoy the views.

Sustainability has been a part of this place since it opened in 2005, the management want to ensure that the local environment and community are protected and preserved.

Llao Llao Resort

The Llao Llao resort occupies an elevated position above the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi and Lake Moreno on the outskirts of San Carlos de Bariloche. Every view from this spectacular resort is breathtaking, whether that is towards Cerro Lopez, Mount Tronador or across the lakes. Barack Obama even spent time at the Llao Llao back in 2016 enjoying the beautiful hotel!

Despite being a large hotel of more than 200 rooms, this hotel doesn’t feel crowded or like a mass resort. To reduce their impact they have a social and environmental responsibility program whereby they protect the environment and respects the needs of the community.
